DC Welcomes Gabriel Pethtel
We gain a unique perspective on life’s circumstances when we choose to trust in God’s sovereignty, and allow him to answer our prayers in light of his omniscience.
We embarked on a search for our next junior high and high school principal this past February. Over the past three months, we were blessed with an overwhelming amount of interested candidates from across the country. The methodical and prayerful approach our search committee took to engage in this process should be commended and celebrated.
With that said, I am pleased to announce the hiring of Gabriel (Gabe) Pethtel as our junior high and high school principal beginning in the 2019- 2020 school year. Gabe and his family currently serve at Los Altos Christian School in Los Altos, California; however, they come to the Midwest and even to DC with previously established roots.
Gabe earned a Bachelor of Science in secondary education from Ball State University, and a Master of educational leadership from Cedarville University. He has over 20 years of experience in academic leadership and teaching, including significant experience as a junior high and high school principal in the Christian school environment.
He most recently held the position as head of school for Los Altos Christian School, which serves students in preschool through 8th grades. While in Los Altos, Gabe helped guide the development of a high school curriculum for Los Altos Christian, which will be implemented in the fall of 2019.
Gabe and his wife, Dana, have a passion for Christian education, and a commitment to follow God’s leading wherever it may take them. Their journey has led them to institutions on both coasts as well as time at DC’s Xenia campus where Gabe served as a High School and AP English teacher, student council advisor, chapel coordinator, and assistant principal more than a decade ago. It was during their previous time in Dayton when their two oldest sons developed a love for military service.
Their oldest son, Logan, will graduate from the United States Air Force Academy in May and will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant with a degree in systems engineering. He will enter Air Force flight school this summer. Their second oldest son, Caleb, will attend his first year at Baylor University with an academic and US Army ROTC scholarship to study mechanical engineering. The Pethtel’s two youngest children – Emma, 7th grade, and Hudson, preschool – will be joining the DC family as students.
While our search was initially focused upon Gabe, it quickly expanded to include the hiring of Dana as well. Dana will join the DC faculty on a part-time basis by using her extensive knowledge and excitement for the sciences to help us strengthen what we offer our students, particularly in the younger grades. Her educational work has benefited from being in California’s Silicon Valley, and previously included a partnership with NASA to develop hands-on learning for students to compare data from experiments on earth with those being done on The International Space Station.
I want to thank the search committee again for their leadership in this detailed process. This team (listed below) represented our school well, and took great care to make sure our next principal embodied what our school needed most to move us into an exciting time of academic and spiritual growth. Gabe brings many important qualities to this position: He is an intentional listener, committed collaborator, and strong academic and spiritual leader.
God was truly at work among this team as they unanimously recommended Gabe for this position. Please join me in thanking them for the time they devoted to this effort on behalf of their colleagues, and our DC families.
You will get to know the Pethtels more after they have arrived this summer. In the meantime, please pray for their family as they embark on this cross-country move and transition into our school family.
