Finding a Life’s Calling
“The fundamental element I want us to pass on to every student is to help them discern their life’s calling.”
This quote really struck me in an interview I had with Dr. Gredy, DCS Head of School, when he first stepped into the role in July. Yes, we are Dayton Christian and our focus is on academics and instilling our students with a Christian worldview, but when our graduates leave DC, it’s important not only to focus on what they need to know, we also need to help them know what they are going to DO.
How do help students find their life calling? According to Gredy, it is a multi-faceted approach.
- Provide students with exposure to differing career paths by listening to those who have already found their life calling. Scientists, entrepreneurs, members of the medical field, and ministry leaders (just to name a few) can enrich our students’ experiences by visiting our classrooms and sharing their career experiences.
- Give students the opportunity to discover their gifts and strengths through assessment tools. (Career surveys are available in our Guidance Department)
- Have students maintain a full class schedule in a variety of disciplines and offer J-term classes that enrich the curriculum.
- Engage the students through the Guidance Department in relational way. In the recent shift in our Guidance Department policies, students will now have one counselor throughout their high school career in order to facilitate this relational approach.
