New Year’s Resolutions That Matter

I don’t know about you, but the weeks after Christmas and New Year’s tends to be a time of introspection for me. After the excess of the holidays and the busyness of the season, I yearn for simplicity. I want organization. I want, in short, what everyone else wants: a new beginning. That’s why we have New Year’s resolutions, after all.

This year, however, I want to look beyond the typical goals of exercising more or eating better. I don’t want it to be about me. I want to focus on the spiritual realm. So this is what I came up with for my spiritual New Year’s resolutions.

1. Eat Better. After all the cookies and treats I’ve eaten over the holiday season, I’m all ready for veggie trays and meals made up of large salads. But what about my spiritual food.? The Bible is referred to as the milk and meat of the Word. We are to crave it. It is our spiritual food. So how is my spiritual diet?

2. Exercise More. With all the shopping and parties, who has time to exercise during December? No one! I am always ready to get back into an exercise routine. But what about exercising those spiritual disciplines? Prayer and Bible study are necessary components of keeping our spiritual life in shape.

3. Be a Better Person. Let’s face it: Christmas often becomes all about me, the gifts, and the fun. But I need an outward focus. I think about how I am serving my community. Am I a light in my neighborhood? Am I serving? There are so many ministries in our community that would benefit from my time.

Although I haven’t shared them here, I have made goals for each of the areas. What about you? I hope you’re thinking about how you can improve and grow this year in ways that matter for eternity.
