Helping Your Child Be Ready For Kindergarten

  • Put them in groups of 12 or more where they can learn to interact with other children and observe them.
  • READ a lot to your child.
  • Talk a lot with your child—expose them to a lot of language experiences.
  • Teach them about responsibility—give them chores.
  • Teach them to clean up—don’t do things for them that they can do for themselves.
  • Let them dress themselves.P Work on character such as patience, obedience, diligence and attentiveness.
  • Increase their “wait time” for your attention and things.
  • Teach them to hold their pencil, crayon, marker with 3 fingers.
  • Teach them to write their first name the school way—the first letter is a capital and others aren’t.
  • If your child has a late birthday (after Feb. for boys and after June for girls) you may want to consider waiting another year before sending your child to kindergarten—talk to a teacher, and
  • others who know your child.
  • Play word games and make them fun.
  • Teach them about patterning.
  • When school starts:
    - Get them to go to bed early—kindergarten is very exhausting.
    - Cut back on TV and computer time and encourage them to play outside.
    - Don’t involve them in too many extra-curricular activities.
