DC to Offer Jazz Band/Advanced Music J-Term Class Taught by Accomplished Musician
For this coming J-Term 2012, DC is offering a Jazz Band/Advance Music class, which will include arranging/orchestration/jazz history/jazz performancewhich will be taught by nationally recognized jazz musician and music educator, John Harner. The class will include arranging/orchestration/jazz history/jazz performance/ and much more! Students do NOT have to be in the DC Band to participate.
JOHN HARNER
John is a trumpet player, brass instructor, music educator, clinician, and conductor that performs for clinics and concerts throughout the United States. His has performed with The Ohio State, Purdue, University of Tennessee Marching Bands, and the British Brass Band of Columbus, as well as many university, high school, and middle schools jazz bands.
He is a former 1st Trumpet player of the Stan Kenton Orchestra and has recorded 3 CD's with them including: "Kenton Plays Chicago," "Fire, Fury, and Fun" and "Kenton '76," where he is the featured soloist on Send in The Clowns. He also was the 1st Trumpet player at the Dunes, the Sands, and the Sahara Hotels, from 1977 until 1984 and the split-lead player at Caesar's Palace in 1983, performing for entertainers like Johnny Carson, Don Rickles, Jerry Lewis, Vic Damone, Frank Sinatra, Jr, and others.
John first became a Christian at the age of 12 when an evangelist, who incidentally played the cornet, came to his church in Xenia. That was when he accepted Christ as his Savior. He followed Christ all throughout high school and at Ohio State. He later had the opportunity to join the Stan Kenton Orchestra as 2nd trumpet. Later, the next year, he was asked to take over the 1st Trumpet Chair. He was with the band for three years, and drifted more and more away from the Lord. He moved to Los Angeles in 1976 and later to Las Vegas in 1977. It was in Las Vegas that John renewed his faith with Christ. Since 1981, John has walked with the Lord on a daily basis and has been blessed with a beautiful wife, Jean, and a son, Matt, and daughter, Liz.
John was a music educator in the Xenia Community Schools for over 25 years, where he conducted three Middle School Bands and the XHS Jazz Band. He was the former Director of the Xenia Marching Band, which has performed at Disney World two times as part of Disney's Magic Music Days Parade and has also performed at Bands of America Grand Nationals in Indianapolis twice.
He is presently the Director of the Cedarville University Pep Band, an adjunct trumpet instructor at Central State University, and Orchestra director at Patterson Park Church in Beavercreek.
John has taught many trumpet student; many are professional players and teachers in Las Vegas, Branson, and other parts of the United States.
