DC Elementary Raise $1,805 for MVWC

Dayton Christian Elementary students raised $1,805 for the Miami Valley Women's Center. Mrs. Cindy Good, from the MVWC, is shown above with students Arlene Hobson (4th grade) and Olivia Holtz (2nd grade) as she does a presentation on "The Miracle of Life" during DCE chapel this week.
Mrs. Wood's 4th grade class earned top prize for being the class with the highest donation amount. The student's shared many stories of sacrifice and hard work in order to give to this worthy cause. We are certain that God will take this offering and multiply it in the lives of our children and in the lives that will be touched through the Miami Valley Women's Center.
International Science & Engineering Fair Results
More astounding news from our Science department:
We were thrilled to learn in March that three Dayton Christian High School students were among the four students chosen to participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair in San Jose, CA from the Montgomery County Science Day. To our knowledge this has only been done once before in the history of MCSD (by Carroll High School).
Michael Gord and Shannon Bidwell were chosen as finalists and Kevin Henkel was an alternate. The students took advantage of this great opportunity to learn from the other 56 different countries represented along with outstanding projects.
Shannon and Kevin have come back with lots of enthusiasm and more ideas. Michael Gord won 2nd place Grand Award and 1st place for the Army award both in the area of Chemistry. He too has lots of new ideas for next year. All three students represented DCS well and worked extremely hard.

Panera "Rising Above" Award Goes to XCS Teacher
Congratulations to XCHS Jessica Smith (Class of 2012) on her winning entry in Panera Bread's "Rising Above Award." Any student in Ohio and Kentucky was eligible to enter an essay on a teacher who "rises above the rest." Jessica wrote her essay on XCHS Science Teacher Van Holloway and why he deserved this award. For authoring the essay, Jessica will receive several prizes and Mr. Holloway will accept a $500 grant on behalf of the Science Department at XCHS. Here's Jessica's entry:
Mr. Holloway is not your everyday science teacher. He continually creates fresh and innovative ways to transform an often difficult and sometimes boring subject into a fun and exciting class; one I actually look forward to every day. Just to keep things exciting, he often stops right in the middle of a lesson to have the class play one of his crazy made-up games like “Ming Mang Mung” or “The Ring Game”. He always seems to find ways to help students bring their grades up and takes the extra time to ensure that everyone truly understands the material. On many days, you will find him at lunchtime going over a lesson with struggling students. Mr. Holloway’s passion is absolutely infectious; he is known by all as the loudest, most enthusiastic, teacher in the hallway. Mr. Holloway is not only passionate about keeping our class fresh and exciting, he also volunteers his time coaching the boys’ and girls’ varsity tennis teams in the spring and
ministering to the youth at the Juvenile Detention Center each week. Mr. Holloway’s spontaneity, innovation, passion, and commitment to all of his students and the community prove he “rises above” the rest.

• National Honor Society challenged the students to raise $500 for the International Justice Mission (www.ijm.org) and Grace Haven House (www.gracehavenhouse.org) using the slogan "Your Change 4 Their Change". The students rallied and raised an amazing $783.58.
• "Kans for Kids" - this ongoing aluminum recycling project to benefit Greater Grace Orphanage (www.greatergraceorphanage.org) in Nigeria has contributed over $160.00 to date.
• The 8th grade class collected $207.25 for Haiti earthquake relief. We praise the Lord for students who are "doers of the Word and not hearers only". (James 1:22)
