Communication During the Trip

During the trip, can I contact my child? Each trip leader will leave contact numbers in the case of an emergency.

Will I be able to communicate with my child during the trip? Some destinations allow the team members to communicate with home using email and internet. However, this is not available for every location so ask the trip leader.

Dress Code and Conduct

What am I allowed to wear? Guidelines for dress are clearly stated in the pdf Code of Conduct which every team member is required to sign.

Are there guidelines for behavior? Expectations for behavior are clearly stated in the Code of Conduct which every team member is required to sign.

Money

How much does the trip cost? The cost of each trip is different. Trip costs are contained in the information about each available trip.

How do I know how much support has come in for my trip? The Foundation Office prints weekly reports which your trip leader distributes.

What happens if I don't raise my full support? Each participant is expected to pay for the cost of his/her trip whether through donations given by others or personally.

Preparation

What type of a time commitment do I have to make to this trip? Each trip has different requirements. J-term trips have a few meetings before J-term and then use J-term class time to complete most of their preparation. Summer teams generally start meeting during the school year and have concentrated meeting times after the school year. Any specific questions that you have should be addressed to the trip leader.

What should I pack? Each trip has a different packing list. Trip leaders will give this information to the team members.

Safety

Will the students be supervised? We try to keep the leader to student ratio less than 1 to 6. Usually a team has at least 3 adult leaders and not more than 15 students.

What happens if a team member is injured? Leaders are very concerned about the safety of the team members but any questions you have about how injuries will be handled should be directed to the trip leader. Medical personnel and the availability of medical facilities varies with each trip.

Is the water safe to drink? This question should be directed to the trip leader because every destination is different. Of course, to ensure safety you may bring your own bottled water.

Do I need shots or vaccinations? The requirements and guidelines are different for each destination. The Centers for Disease Control maintains an updated list.

Is travel to this country safe? The U.S. State Department maintains a list that should answer any questions.

Travel

Am I required to have a passport for this trip? Yes, if the trip is out of the country.  As of January 8, 2007, the Wetsern Hemisphere Travel Initiative requires passports for all an out-of-country trips. Click here for forms and more information.

How many suitcases can I take? Most airlines charge for each piece of luggage so each person should be very careful as he/she packs.  Regardless of the luggage fees, check-in bags cannot weigh more than 50 pounds and each person is limited to 1 carry-on bag. However, please note that the trip leader may limit the number of suitcases based on the travel plans once the team arrives in the country.

How much spending money should I take? Students are encouraged not to take large amounts of money. Each trip leader will give a recommended amount.
