Community Service Requirement

I. PURPOSE

A corporate conviction of Dayton Christian Schools is that young people need to receive stimulation and training in missions education in order to:

  1. Gain a world view of missions.
  2. Consider seriously missions and other Christian vocations as a career.
  3. Become involved in the local church and Christian community. (Matthew 28:19-20; Acts 1:8)

The purpose of the missions/service requirement for Dayton Christian High School is in harmony with this corporate conviction. It is our desire to help our students gain a Christian world view, to be encouraged to experience a close walk with God and to bring glory to Him through their ministry. The missions/service requirements provide this opportunity.

II. REQUIREMENTS

Each student must meet minimum hours of missions/service requirement each year (freshman-20 hours; sophomores, juniors and seniors-30 hours). The missions/service requirement must be met in order for the student to graduate or to return to DCHS the following school year.

  1. Our goal is for the student to experience the joy of serving; thus the fulfillment of this requirement is purposely made flexible. The student may fulfill the requirement by using summers and/or the school year. Example: A student entering the 9th grade can meet his/her freshman year service requirement in one of the following ways:
    1. Meet all the clock hours of participation during the summer prior to his/her freshman year.
    2. Meet all the clock hours of participation during the summer following his/her freshman year.
    3. Meet all the clock hours of participation during his/her freshman school year.
    4. Meet the clock hours of participation through any combination of the above.

This same type of flexibility is applicable to all grade levels except that Seniors must have their hours in before they may graduate.

  1. Service is defined as:
    1. Clock hours of active participation
      1. Taking a class or going on a retreat does not qualify.
      2. Active participation means doing, not listening, watching or observing.
    1. An activity being ministry oriented (giving of self to others in service and time).
    2. Being supervised, directly or indirectly, by an adult.
    3. Selected from the approved list or approved prior to the beginning of the activity by the high school administration.
    4. Should be done outside school hours.

Reporting will be done by the student turning in the “Missions/Service Requirement” form, signed by the adult supervisor.

This list is not an exclusive list. If a ministry is not on the list, prior approval can be obtained from the high school administration.

  • Nursing Home Volunteer
  • Resident Home Volunteer
  • Crisis Pregnancy Center
  • Dayton Right to Life
  • Gospel Mission
  • Vacation Bible School
  • Bible Clubs
  • Literacy Program
  • S.O.U.L. (Students Offering Unconditional Love)
  • Church Choir
  • Playing a Musical Instrument at Church or Church-Sponsored Activities
  • Youth Group Leadership
  • Church Maintenance or Custodial
  • Evangelism Program (Example: Evangelism Explosion)
  • Camp Staff
  • DCS Staff
  • Babysitting
  • Church Drama or Ensemble
  • Tutoring
  • AWANA/Royal Ranger Type Groups
  • Leadership Mission Trips Sponsored by a Church, DCS, or Other Approved Agency
  • Operation of Church Sound or Video System
  • Helping Senior Citizens
  • Teacher Aide (Outside of School Hours)
  • Computer Work for Church
